Photography tip: Canon’s sRAW format is not supported by Aperture

Insupported Image Format

The graphic above was displayed in place of the image in a series of pictures I imported from Canon 5D Mark II. This kept me puzzled for a while until I remembered that I had switched from RAW to sRAW because I knew I would not need the full 21 Megapixels. I did a test by taking a picture at each RAW setting, and it turned out that sRAW1 and sRAW2 are unsupported by Apple in Aperture. This apparently goes for all other Canon cameras with the sRAW option too.

I am posting this because others might be wondering why they get this lovely burgundy rectangle instead of their images. My first thought was that the images were corrupted, but the images open just fine in Photoshop.

I have not been able to verify if Lightroom supports sRAW. If you know, please drop a comment below!

Thanks for the posting – I had been searching for someone who knew why Lightroom would not import sRAW. I am using Lightroom 1 and have not upgraded yet. Perhaps version 2 supports sRAW.

    Same camera

I received my 5D MK II about 3 weeks ago. I have already shot over 2,000 shots and I can’t believe the pictures. Most of my work is youth hockey. Shooting in Manual mode with ISO set at 6,400, I am able to shoot at 1/500th or better at f 3.5. My standard lens is the 70-200mm f2.8L and naturally I never use flash.

The details are incredible, noise not a factor, and it focuses pretty fast. My previous camera was the 30D, and there is just no comparison. I have had no problems with battery life either.

For the money ($2,699) truly a great camera. I can’t wait to do my next wedding.
